Early life

On February 15, 1969, a boy named Bryan Christopher Brooks was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His parents, Johnnie Williams and Gladys Brooks took almost a month to name him. Because Johnnie Williams did not sign the birth certificate, Bryan used his mother’s last name. In 1975, Birdman was five years old when his mother became sick and died.

As a result, Birdman and his family moved into an apartment above the bar his father owned. As Birdman and his siblings lived in British Columbia after Gladys died, they spent two years in foster care. Once their father learned that they were in foster care, Birdman and his siblings were reunited with their father.

A lawsuit was filed to gain custody of his kids in the 1970s. Birdman moved into the house of his stepmother Patricia and his father Johnnie. At this time he changed his last name to Williams.

While living in the Magnolia Projects in New Orleans, Birdman was involved in armed robberies and the sale of heroin with his stepbrother Eldrick Wise.

Williams served 18 months in a correctional center and was acquitted of all charges after being arrested at 16 and 18. Birdman and Wise were both arrested at 18 and sentenced to three years in a correctional facility.

Career

In New Orleans nightclubs at the time, Birdman and his brother, Ronald “Slim” Williams, took notice of the emerging bounce sub-genre of hip-hop. In order to sign artists to their newly formed record label, the brothers formed their own label, Cash Money Records, and toured around Louisiana, taking in acts at nightclubs in order to find artists.

The first artist they signed was rapper Kilo G.Birdman signed DJ Mannie Fresh to Cash Money in 1992 after listening to his horrorcore album The Sleepwalker. Birdman and Slim continued to recruit new artists to Cash Money until eventually, they convinced DJ Mannie Fresh to become the label’s in-house producer.

The Cash Money record label grew to become one of the biggest independent labels in the south by the mid-1990s. In 1995, Birdman met Dwayne Carter, a young rapper who was then 12 years old. Dwayne Carter was signed to Cash Money. In spite of their regional success, Cash Money faced a number of setbacks, including the murders of Kilo G, Pimp Daddy, and Yella.

Birdman and Slim took advantage of the situation to assemble a new band with Turk and Juvenile. That same year, Birdman started rapping, forming a group with Mannie Fresh called the Big Tymers with Lil Wayne. This was the right move for Cash Money, and they signed a $30 million deal with Universal Records.

Cash Money lost B.G. and Juvenile during this time, forcing Birdman to turn to solo work. Birdman then released “How Ya Luv That?” in 1998, followed by “Hood Rich” and “I Got That Work.” Cash Money’s biggest artist, released Tha Carter in 2004, which has been both critically and commercially successful. Lil’ Wayne is Birdman’s major-label debut. The album peaks at number 24 on Billboard 200.

Birdman’s second album reached number nine on the Billboard 200 chart when it was released in 2005. Like Father, Like Son, Birdman’s first collaborative album with Lil Wayne was released on Halloween 2006 and topped the charts.

At its peak, Cash Money Records generated $100 million in revenue annually, which made it the most profitable label in hip-hop history. The label sold 50 million records.

Despite signing a distribution agreement with Universal Music in 1998, Cash Money earned a minimum of $30 million before a single record was released. However, in one of the boldest moves of all, Cash Money negotiated a deal that allowed them the right to own their own records.

Even The Beatles didn’t get a deal like this! Instead of getting a couple of cents for every record sold, the record company gets a few dollars for each unit sold. In early 2010, Birdman launched a business called “Bronald Oil” alongside his brother.

Among Bryan’s plans was to explore and develop oil resources in Oklahoma’s Osage County and the Gulf Coast. It’s unclear if they were able to find oil or if their venture became successful.

As of today, Birdman owns fewer properties than he did at the start of his career. His property portfolio includes a $30 million condo in Miami, two recording studios in Miami, and a mansion in New Orleans. Hip hop producer Scott Storch bought the mansion on Palm Island for $10.5 million in 2006.

Birdman’s 20,000-square-foot mansion was on the verge of being foreclosed on when he sought to sell it for $20 million. He first offered $16.9 million, then $15 million, and finally accepted $10.9 million.

An owner of a Bel-Air mansion sued Birdman in December 2021, claiming $114,000 in back rent. Petitioners claim Birdman agreed to pay $33,000 per month in rent for the mansion, but eventually stopped paying.
