Brandon Staley Playing Career

After graduating from the University of Dayton, Staley began playing quarterback with the Flyers. He expertly led the squad to a noteworthy 16–5 record between 2003 and 2004.

Staley’s playing career came to an end in 2005 while he was a member of Mercyhurst College’s football team, where he also received his graduation.

Coaching Career

From 2006 to 2008, Brandon worked as a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois before starting his coaching career. He moved to St. Thomas (Minnesota), a Division III university, in 2009, where he was primarily responsible for special teams and defensive line coaching.

In 2010 and 2011, Staley was the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Kansas’ Hutchinson Community College. The 2012 season saw him work as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee.

After that, Staley worked as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at John Carroll University (Ohio) for three seasons (2013, 2015, and 2016). He became the outside linebackers coach of the Chicago Bears in 2017.

Staley was hired by the Denver Broncos on January 15, 2019, bringing him back together with head coach Vic Fangio as the outside linebackers coach. On January 16, 2020, the Los Angeles Rams named Staley their defensive coordinator, taking Wade Phillips’ place.

On January 17, 2021, Staley was hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, continuing his coaching career. On September 12, 2021, he made his regular-season debut, leading the Chargers to a 20–16 victory over the Washington Football Team.

In 2022, the Chargers finished with a 10–7 record and took second place in the AFC West under his leadership. On January 14, 2023, the fifth-seeded Chargers took on the fourth-seeded Jacksonville Jaguars (9-8) in the AFC Wild Card round.

The Chargers had a commanding 27–0 lead at the beginning of the game, but the Jaguars rallied spectacularly and won the game 31–30 thanks to a last-minute field goal. This was the third-biggest comeback in NFL playoff history.
