In addition to being a highly talented football player, John also played baseball while attending Jefferson High School, which was located just south of San Francisco. Both on offense and defense, John showed promise.

The play of each play was explained by Madden as he watched videos of football games. During Madden’s time as a teacher, his knowledge of teaching was infused with his love of football, resulting in a career in coaching.
Madden became Allan Hancock College’s head coach two years later. Then he accepted an assistant defensive coaching position at San Diego State, which he held until 1966. Madden credited the key to his NFL success to Don Coryell, who was a strategic genius during this time.
In 1967, Oakland Raiders hired John Madden as linebacker’s coach. It was Head Coach Al Davis who taught Madden. He had learned from Sid Gillman before him. Consequently, Madden indirectly absorbed the philosophies of a man who revolutionized professional football. In 1969, when John Madden took over the team from Davis, he became the youngest head coach in NFL history.
The Raiders’ greatest coach is considered by many to be Madden. While they lost many big games between 1969 and 1975, they won the AFC Championship and Superbowl in 1976. When they won the AFC Championship in 1977, they ended their losing streak. As coaching had taken a serious toll on Madden’s health, he retired in 1979.
