Kalpana Chawla was born on March 17, 1962, in the town of Karnal, located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. She was the daughter of Banarasi Lal Chawla, a businessman, and Sanjyothi Chawla, a social worker. Growing up, she was known as “Montu” because of her parents, but when she started school, she chose the name “Kalpana,” which means “thought” or “imagination” in Hindi. She later adopted the initials “K.C.” as her preferred name. Kalpana had a love for activities like backpacking, trekking, flying, and reading.

Kalpana Chawla was born into an upper-class family in Karnal, Punjab, on March 17, 1962. She completed her education at Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School in Karnal and earned her B.Tech degree in 1982 from the Punjab Engineering College at Chandigarh in Aeronautical Engineering.

Education
Kalpana Chawla attended Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School in Karnal for her primary and secondary education in India. She later became a NASA astronaut and was dedicated to ensuring that young women in India had access to science-based education.
Career
Kalpana Chawla held a commercial pilot license and was a licensed flight instructor, assessing aircraft and gliders. She also held a technician class amateur radio certification through the Federal Communications Commission. Her impressive qualifications in aerospace engineering led her to work with NASA, initially joining Overset Methods, Inc. as Vice President in 1993. She conducted research in computational fluid dynamics, particularly in the field of Vertical/Short Takeoffs and Landings (V/STOL). In 1995, she became a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps.
Death
On February 1, 2003, tragedy struck as the space shuttle STS-107 disintegrated upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, claiming the lives of all seven crew members, including Kalpana Chawla.
