Early Life
Mallikarjun Kharge was born in Varawatti, Bhalki Taluk, Bidar district, Karnataka, to Mapanna Kharge and Sabavva. He pursued his primary and secondary education at Nutan Vidyalaya in Gulbarga. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Government College in Gulbarga and a Law degree from Seth Shankarlal Lhoti Law College, Gulbarga.

Kharge’s educational journey began at Nutan Vidyalaya in Gulbarga for his schooling. Subsequently, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from Government College in Gulbarga and a law degree from Seth Shankarlal Law College, also located in Gulbarga. His legal career commenced as a junior in Justice Shivraj Patil’s office, where he primarily handled labor union cases during that phase of his professional life.

Mallikarjun Kharge is married to Radhabai, and their marriage took place on May 13, 1968. They are blessed with three children—two daughters and one son. Kharge follows the Buddhist faith and has played a significant role as the chairman and founder of the Siddharth Vihar Trust, where he oversaw the establishment of the Buddha Vihar in Gulbarga.
Kharge enjoys strong support from the Congress leadership, with Ashok Gehlot endorsing his candidacy as a leading contender in the presidential race. There have been speculations about Kharge sharing a friendly rapport with the Gandhis.
Political Career
Mallikarjun Kharge embarked on his political journey by taking an active role in student union leadership during his college years. He was elected as the General Secretary of the College Student Body, demonstrating his early leadership skills. In 1969, he assumed the position of legal advisor to the MSK Mills Employees Union.
Kharge’s influence extended to the realm of labor unions, where he emerged as a prominent leader within the Samyukta Majdoor Sangha, championing numerous labor rights movements. In 1969, Mallikarjun Kharge formally joined the Indian National Congress, and he also held the position of President of the Gulbarga City Congress Committee.
