After graduating, he attended Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois, where he earned an Associate’s degree in criminal justice.
Hughes began training in mixed martial arts (MMA) in the mid-1990s and made his professional debut in 1998. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled grappler and won his first six fights.
In 2001, he signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and made his debut at UFC 34, where he defeated Valeri Ignatov by submission.
Hughes went on to become one of the most successful and dominant fighters in the UFC, winning the welterweight title twice and successfully defending it several times. He retired from professional fighting in 2011 with a record of 45 wins and 9 losses.
