Early Life

Shetty hails from Mangalore, Karnataka, born into a Tulu-speaking Bunt family. Her parents, Sunanda Shetty and Surendra Shetty, are both involved in manufacturing water caps with tamperproof seals for the medical industry. She is also the elder sister of Shamita Shetty.

In 1991, after completing her tenth-grade exams, Shetty embarked on her career as a model, making her debut in a Limca commercial on television. Subsequently, she became a prominent face in various commercials, eventually leading to opportunities in the film industry. Shetty successfully juggled her modeling career while transitioning into acting.

Education

Shetty studied at St. Anthony’s Girls High School in Chembur and later attended Poddar College in Matunga. During her school years, she served as the captain of the volleyball team and was also an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer.

Personal Life

After working together with Akshay Kumar in “Main Khiladi Tu Anari” (1994), Shetty began dating Kumar on the set of “Insaaf” (1997) in the same year, shortly after he had ended a relationship with actor Raveena Tandon. Shetty was open about her relationship with Kumar, and it was widely reported in the Indian media. Some reports even suggested that Shetty was engaged, and there were speculations that Kumar wanted her to stop working in films and marry him.

However, Shetty was clear that she did not have immediate plans for marriage. The couple eventually parted ways in 2000 while working on the film “Dhadkan.” Then, in February 2009, Shetty got married to Raj Kundra, with whom she co-owned the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team Rajasthan Royals. Their wedding took place on November 22, 2009. Shetty gave birth to a son on May 21, 2012. Later, on February 15, 2020, the couple welcomed a baby girl through surrogacy.
