Early Life

Hailing from Mumbai, Sunil Gavaskar was born on July 10, 1949. His cricket journey began at the tender age of seven. In 1966, Sunil Gavaskar earned the title of the Best Schoolboy Cricket Player in India. During his school cricket days, he showcased his talent with remarkable scores, including 246*, 222, and 85 runs. He made his debut in the Ranji Trophy during the 1968/69 season in a match against Karnataka, though it didn’t start on a high note as he was dismissed for a duck, scoring zero runs.


Sunil Gavaskar attended St. Xavier’s School, which had a renowned cricketing legacy. During his school days, he actively participated in cricket and earned recognition as India’s best schoolboy cricketer in 1966. His journey into first-class cricket began as he debuted for Vazir Singh Colts XI between 1966 and 1967.
