When she grew up, Tina sang in the Spring Hill Baptist Church choir in Nutbush after the family returned to Nutbush after the war. The family’s mother left when Tina was eleven years old, and her father moved to Detroit after remarrying.

Career

Tina first became interested in Ike Turner’s group, the Kings of Rhythm, through her sister, who was a regular at nightclubs in St. Louis. Ike Turner eventually became a featured vocalist with Tina, as a result of her singing skills.

Since he had already paid for the recording studio time, Ike had Tina sing the lead part instead of Art Lassiter whose voice was supposed to be in the background of “A Fool in Love.”.Juggy Murray, president of R&B label Sue Records, convinced him to send the track to him after hearing her vocals in the demo.

Ike Turner gave Tina the stage name “Tina Turner,” and the name was trademarked. As a result, Murray bought the song, paying $25,000 in advance for the rights to it.
