Tom Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California. His parents, Amos Mefford Hanks and Janet Marylyn Frager were active in the church and raised their son with a traditional conservative upbringing.
He is of English, Portuguese, and Irish descent. Hanks attended Skyline High School in Oakland, California, where he acted in school plays and developed an interest in drama. After high school, he attended Chabot College in Hayward, California, where he studied theater and received an associate degree in 1976.
He then transferred to California State University, Sacramento, where he studied theater and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978. During his studies, Hanks worked in the drama department at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and at the Berkeley Repertory Theater.
